RIYADH — Embedded finance startup Vrtx has raised a $3.6 million pre-seed round, one of the larger first cheques for a Saudi fintech this year, from a seven-investor syndicate with no single lead.

The round drew SC Ventures by Standard Chartered, Sadu Capital, BYLD, Suhail Ventures, F6 Ventures, TAZ Investment and Palm Ventures. The breadth of the list, mixing a global bank's venture arm with regional early-stage funds, suggests investors see infrastructure, not another consumer app, as the next Saudi fintech opening.

Vrtx, founded in 2025, builds the plumbing for digital wallets, payments, card issuance, transfers and transaction processing, letting client companies launch compliant financial products without building the regulated stack themselves. Crucially, it holds preliminary approval from the Saudi Central Bank for a digital wallet and electronic money institution license, a regulatory position that takes most applicants years to reach.

The founding pair bring relevant exits. Chief executive Mishal bin Salmah and co-founder Omar Shaaban both previously worked at Tawarruq, the early digital finance platform acquired by Tabby, giving them direct experience of building regulated finance products in the kingdom and selling one.

Saudi Arabia's embedded finance layer remains thin compared with its payments and lending sectors, and SAMA's licensing pipeline is the bottleneck every infrastructure player must clear.

Watch whether Vrtx converts its preliminary SAMA approval into a full license within the next twelve months, and which client category, marketplaces or payroll platforms, signs on first. Jawlah first reported the round.
